MP backs biodiesel tax break campaign

29 June 2011

Liberal Democrat MP Andrew George is backing a project to keep tax breaks for companies who produce biodiesel.

Producers converting cooking oil into biodiesel currently take advantage of a 20p however that is because of end next April.

The St Ives MP, who leads the Lib Dem Environment Team, has actually been meeting with the UK sustainable biodiesel alliance.

Mr George said "a number of small companies in Cornwall currently earn money from used cooking oil".

He added: "In order to be able to get this type of market going it does need just a bit of lift which comes in the form of tax inevitable."

Biodiesel is a mix of conventional diesel, rapeseed and vegetable oils.
